Upcoming Purdue Global Law School Distinguished Speaker Series explores outer space’s laws, liabilities and commerce

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Global Law School will host “The New Space Race: Laws, Liabilities and Lunar Commerce” on Sept. 1 for the next installment of its Distinguished Speaker Series.
The live webinar, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT/noon PDT, will be hosted by Martin Pritikin, dean and vice president of Purdue Global Law School, and will feature Michelle Hanlon, executive director of the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi and co-founder of For All Moonkind.
Pritikin and Hanlon — who is dubbed the “Godmother of Space Law” — will discuss the complex frontiers of extraterrestrial law, from establishing lunar mineral rights and protecting heritage sites to assigning liability for space debris. Together they will explore who truly governs the stars and how international frameworks must evolve to handle crimes, accidents and commerce in the new space age.
“Space law is no longer just the stuff of science fiction,” Pritikin said. “Companies are looking to make lunar travel commonplace, and drones may soon become ubiquitous. No one is better equipped to explain the landscape than Professor Hanlon, one of the literal pioneers of the field.”
