October is National Fire Prevention Month, as designated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), with National Fire Prevention Week recognized Oct. 4-10.

This year’s theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower” and focuses on everyday charging habits to keep homes and communities safer, especially with electronic items that use lithium-ion batteries, such as phones, laptops and wearable devices..

In this video, Daniel Shoffner, a fire science faculty member in Purdue Global’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, talks about the importance of taking time in October to focus on fire prevention, the dangers of lithium-ion batteries and warning signs. Shoffner also provides safety tips families can put in place to help reduce the risk of fires caused by misuse of lithium-ion batteries.

Purdue Global’s fire science programs have been accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
