Alum_Maria_VallejoMaria Vallejo had been jumping from job to job and knew she wanted a career in the health care field. After receiving a call from Purdue Global in 2010, she enrolled and completed an associate’s degree in medical office management. She didn’t stop there though. Maria went on to earn her bachelor's degree in health care administration. Read Maria’s story and Purdue Global journey below in her own words.

The journey to further my education began in 2010, after three years of jumping from job-to-job trying to find a career. I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in health care but being the mother of young children, I didn’t think it would be possible. The phone call from Kaplan [University] changed my life. I enrolled and completed an associate’s degree in medical office management and the online education allowed me to balance building my family while building my future. I continued this success, enrolling into and completing my bachelor’s degree in health care administration.

I felt that the Milwaukee campus, along with the convenience of online courses, provided the personal touch that other universities may lack. My Admissions Advisor helped me explore the program options that would complement my associate’s degree, identifying the program that best fit my interest. My Financial Aid Advisor, was knowledgeable about the process and was always helpful when I needed things repeated or translated in layman’s terms.

I was introduced to the Federal Work Study Program at Purdue Global and career services assisted me in preparing for the screening and interview process so that I was able to secure a position in the program. Through the Federal Work Study Program, I obtained a position with Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) as an intern. This position not only gave me experience in the health care field, but it also correlated with courses throughout my degree so that I was able to apply what I was learning to real-life scenarios.

Purdue Global gave me more than an education—it provided me with love and support from my school family and the opportunity to demonstrate my work ethic to a great organization, which led to full-time employment in my field. Purdue Global does not just provide exceptional education but also partners with excellent organizations within the community to provide their students with opportunities to gain experience within their related field of study.

Thank you, Purdue Global, for being more than just a school.
