School of Nursing

In Brief

Purdue University Global’s School of Nursing, one of the leading educators of nursing professionals in the country, is committed to training nurses to deliver health care that is evidence-based, safe, and sensitive to the culture of the patient, family, and community at large. The School of Nursing helps its students and graduates build careers in nursing positions where they are expected to blend the latest advances in nursing science and other disciplines with outstanding leadership and interprofessional collaborative care.

Our nursing graduates are tasked with caring for an aging population with greater health care demands, and they play an important role in developing solutions to better manage care, costs, access, and more at a critical time when health care is undergoing unprecedented change.

Most nursing students at Purdue Global are already far along in their nursing careers. They are older (median age 37), working full or part time in the nursing field and raising families while attending school.

Nursing Programs

Purdue Global’s School of Nursing offers five programs. These include the following:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN): This degree program prepares individuals to become a registered nurse (RN) and to take the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) licensing exam.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): The BSN degree program is offered in two pathways, the prelicensure BSN (PLBSN) and the RN-to-BSN: The PLBSN prepares individuals to become an RN and to take the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. The RN-BSN pathway is for RNs prepared at the diploma or ADN level and is designed to provide an education that enhances the RN’s knowledge and skills to better meet the complex and evolving demands of health care.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN): This degree program builds on a BSN-prepared RN’s previous nursing educational and clinical experience. It prepares students to pursue advanced practice in a variety of health care settings, selecting from five specific areas. The specialty areas at Purdue Global for the MSN include the following: Executive Leader, Nurse Educator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGC): This program is for RNs who already have an MSN and want to pursue an additional specialty area. The PGC specialty areas include the following: Executive Leader, Nurse Educator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Launched in 2013 and focused on preparing nursing leaders to practice at the highest levels in professional nursing, the DNP program is delivered online with students completing a minimum of 1,000 postbaccalaureate practice hours within their communities. The DNP program is designed to prepare nurses to analyze data and scientific research to improve the nursing practice and quality of health care.
