General Education Literacies
The primary goal of the General Education program at Purdue University Global is to ensure that, through repeated practice throughout their program, students will understand the interrelationship of broad fields of human inquiry and how they apply to their personal and professional lives. Specifically, we expect students to understand and apply the basic concepts of arts and humanities, communication, critical thinking, ethics, mathematics, research, science, social science, and technology. The skills gained therein allow students to communicate effectively, think critically, make ethical and logical decisions, solve complex problems, and value and understand the worth of others.
Purdue Global does this with its distributed model, which, over the last decade, has interwoven discipline-specific outcomes (Course Outcomes); the “soft skills” that are transferable and sustainable across careers (General Education Literacies); and the professional behaviors associated with gainful employment and career advancement (Professional Competencies) throughout its courses and programs. These Learning Outcomes prepare students to advance academically, professionally, and even personally during their time at Purdue Global and beyond into their careers.
General Education Literacies (GELs): Each course helps students develop critical thinking, reasoning, and writing skills that are foundational and transferable across all careers. Here, students gain knowledge in nine areas of literacy: arts and humanities, communications, critical thinking, ethics, mathematics, research and information, science, social science, and technology.
GEL-1: Communications: Demonstrate college-level communication through a variety of media.
GEL-1.02: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English.
GEL-1.03: Demonstrate college-level communication through the oral delivery of original materials in Standard English.
GEL-2: Mathematics: Apply quantitative reasoning to real-world situations.
GEL-2.01: Communicate the impact of mathematical results pertaining to a discipline-specific situation.
GEL-2.02: Interpret data as they apply to a discipline-specific situation.
GEL-2.03: Solve real-world problems using mathematics.
GEL-3: Science: Analyze how scientific principles are applied in real-world contexts.
GEL-3.01: Use experimental inquiry to inform problem solving.
GEL-3.02: Analyze how heredity influences characteristics of populations.
GEL-3.03: Examine the interdependence and potential for positive change between human systems and the environment.
GEL-3.04: Examine the relationship between science and technology and their impact on the natural world.
GEL-3.05: Apply scientific inquiry to support explanations that are empirically based.
GEL-4: Social Science: Critically evaluate the social or psychological issues that impact human behavior.
GEL-4.01: Describe how personal experiences influence workplace culture.
GEL-4.02: Distinguish among different theoretical perspectives in the social sciences.
GEL-4.03: Understand patterns of human behavior based upon real-world observation.

GEL-5: Arts and Humanities: Recognize human potential through a study of human expressions.

GEL-6: Research and Information: Apply methods for finding, evaluating, and using resources to undertake research.
